There are a lot of high-quality precision scopes available for target shooters and even long range shooters; however, virtually all of them are woefully inadequate under low-light conditions at dawn or dusk.  We have shot most of them... from our Nightforce NXS 12-42x56 to a wide variety of Leopolds and Redfields.  Now, don't get us wrong, these are fine, very well-made scopes for precision and/or long-range shooting... BUT, under low-light conditions, most leave a lot to be desired... as do virtually all riflescopes on the market.  The reason is that their optical glass is only capable of transmitting around 92% of the light received.  As such, in the early morning hours or just before dark, when a lot of our quarry is active, one is hard-pressed to get on target.  Because of that, we had just about given up on trying to find that one scope that was great for precision bench rest shooting as well as long-range hunting for antelope and coyotes.

That all changed when we had the opportunity to try out this scope.  Reinhard Seipp, the COO of Meopta, told us at the SHOT Show that this scope was what we were looking for.  He informed us that it used the same high-quality glass as his MeoPro 3-9x50 scope (and we already knew that was great for low-light conditions).  Meopta refers to these optics as the TO2TM (Twilight Optimized Optics) system.  It is guaranteed to deliver the highest light transmission possible in the low light of dawn and dusk.  As such, we had to get one of these and give it a try.  .

Looking through the eyepiece of this scope was as though you were right in front of the target.  The clarity was almost unbelievable.  We took it outside at dusk and scanned our herd of animals at over 100 yards.... you could almost count the eyelashes on our llamas.  We compared the Meopta to several other high power target scopes and ... well, you could see the outline of the animals' heads and that was about it.

After mounting the MeoPro 6.5-20 scope on Mary's Remington M700 .22-250, we headed out to the mesa for some prairie dog hunting.  The resolution, lack of distortion, and positive tracking of the controls were perfect.  We selected the hunting version for out tests with capped turrets; however, there is also a version with exposed turrets for those who will use this scope primarily for precision target shooting (HTR – which stands for Hunt/Tactical/Range).  We had no problem targeting prairie dogs with this scope on our gun.  In fact, it almost seemed unfair as they couldn't hide.

There are several other features of this scope that set it apart from the "pack":

  • The ELOX anodized hard coating on the main tube, which makes it almost impervious to scratching or marring.

  • The MB5501 proprietary anti-reflective coatings on the optics are the best in the industry.  Several companies have been trying to duplicate the MB5501 coating, to no avail.

  • The windage/elevation turrets provide a tactile "feedback" when you adjust them.  Yes, you can actually feel the adjustments, no more straining to hear the clicks or wondering if you actually got it right.

  • Proprietary ion assisted lens coatings.  MeoBrightTM coating eliminates glare and reflections and delivers incredibly bright (99.7% transmission per lens surface) and sharp images across the field of view.  MeoShieldTM coating protects external lens surfaces from abrasions and scratches.

  • MeoTrak RZ Turrets:

Hunting Turret:  Resettable zero, posi-click, finger-adjustable windage and elevation turrets ensure maximum adjustment range and instant re-zeroing.  The turret dials can be quickly repositioned without changing the adjustment setting of the scope, allowing the shooter to accurately reset to the original zero of the scope if further adjustments are required.

  • MeoTrak TRZ Turrets:

Target Turrets: Oversized, resettable zero, posi-click, finger-adjustable windage and elevation target turrets ensure maximum adjustment range and reliable re-zeroing.  The precise, numerically indexed, oversized turret dials can be quickly repositioned without changing the adjustment setting of the scope, allowing the shooter to accurately reset to the original zero of the rifle if further adjustments are required.

  • MeoQuickTM fast-focus eyepiece rapidly brings targets into sharp focus and provides extra diopter travel to accommodate a wider range of visual acuity variations.

The elevation adjustment of 45 MOA is more than adequate for long-range hunting and most precision target shooting.  If you feel you need more, you can add a 20 MOA picatinny rail, which most target shooters already have installed on their guns and you have 65 MOA of elevation adjustment... plenty for out to even 800 yards.

There is a reason why the Meopta scopes are so superior.  Reinhard Seipp is also a world-class hunter, having spent many hours in the forests and mountains of Europe and the U.S.  Unlike a lot of executives who simply run their companies, he developed his products to perform under the variety of the conditions that he experienced.  He would not accept anything except the best for his personal use AND did not expect his customers to accept anything less either.  As such, his line of riflescopes and binoculars are, in our opinion, among the best (if not the best) on the market today.

Mary summed up our experience with MeoPro scopes better than I can ever hope to.  The fast-focus eyepiece makes it possible to rapidly adjust the target image for perfect edge-to-edge sharpness.  There is absolutely no distortion.  In her words, you do not "feel" like you are looking through any glass or optical system... it is though you simply have IMPROVED VISION.
