Larry Weishuhn is an experienced hunter who has chased almost every African game species, but he’s never hunted on a red sand desert with the heat and unsteady footing pushing his skills.
In Universal Hunter’s featured article, “Namib Sands,” Weishuhn shares his adventure hunting gemsbuck in an area with very little cover – other than sand dunes – to make a stalk. The fall issue of Universal Hunter is now available on newsstands and online at http://UniversalHunter.Com.
Also featured in the summer issue is “Halfway to Grand Slam,” by Jen O’Hara who shares the story of her first trip to Spain to hunt Ibex with “Girls With Guns” business partner and friend, Norissa Harman. After a very close call with a Beceite Ibex, the girls went after Southeastern Ibex, but the area lacked cover. “My PH told me it was much harder to hunt the Southeastern Ibex, but I was excited for the challenge and knew this could be my only chance. And getting this animal would mean I’m halfway to earning my Spanish Grand Slam!” wrote O’Hara.
Don’t miss Julie McQueen’s article, “The Vicarious Grand Slam,” outlining her husband’s adventure for a Turkey Grand Slam. “I know I’m not alone when I talk about recognizing our goals through others’ accomplishments,” wrote McQueen. Although she did have one major mishap on this particular trip that sent her to the emergency room! And in “Size it Right!” by John Dustin, learn how to properly fit young hunters for their first rife. Dustin shares stories of poor-fitting rifles – mostly hand-me-downs, “The kid shoots three shots before quitting, but only one hits the entire target. Or, without shoulder support, the stiff recoil of the very first shot sends the scope’s ocular housing crashing back into the eyebrow.”
“Adventures mean so much more when you share it with a friend or loved one, like with Julie McQueen’s story of her husband’s turkey Grand Slam or Jen and Norissa hunting in Spain. We are very family-oriented at Universal Hunter and know first-hand the simplest trips or hunts can sometimes be the most memorable,” said Chantelle Kapp, editor.
Regular columnists Dr. Jim and Mary Clary continue to provide product reviews on items from GAMO Whisper Fusion Mach 1 .22 Caliber Air Rifle, CoyoteLight Predator CL1 and SJK Thermal Cloak – Kryptek Highlander. On the cloak, they wrote, “Unless you live in the tropics, this is an essential piece of equipment for anyone who wants to stay warm while out in the boondocks. The MSRP of $199.95 is not a high price to pay for the security and comfort afforded by the Thermal Cloak.”
And finally, don’t miss a special Q&A with Executive Chef, Scott Leysath. Leysath has been cooking anything with fins, fur and feathers going on 30 years and shares his advice for how to cook that venison steak ‘just right.’
